Motivation Skills Overview

To Our Readers and Supporters:
I have received so many inquiries with respect to the Motivation Skills component of our MES courses that I’m printing below an overview of the empowering concepts that are part of all courses taught by MES. Lesson Plans on both the Basic and Advanced Level are available for all the concepts listed below. Just go to our website at modedsys-nereg.com, and click on the “Store” page for further info.                                                                                          Doug M.

Motivation Skills Concepts-
An Overview
1.)    Attitude is everything!!! Mr. Miagi’s first lesson.
2.)    Focus Powah!!! The “Focus”, Goal, Dream, or “Reason Why” gives us Power.
3.)    “Power” to do what? Power to reach for and to achieve the “Extraordinary”! (Dead Poets Society)
4.)    Why believe this? The concept of “Human Dignity”
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
-          Marianne Williamson
5.)    Implications of the “Dignity Concept”:
a.)    Soul made in the image of God knows no limit.
b.)    “Powerful beyond measure” See the “Fingers versus Focus” metaphor below.
c.)    We are treasure, not trash; jewel, not junk; diamond, not a piece of cheap glass.
d.)    We have unique worth, value – like the sun in the sky, we too have a calling to serve some vital role in creation, to impact this world in a unique way, in a way that only we can touch it and transform it.
e.)    We are called to be an “original, not a copy, a copy, a copy…
“One thing I don’t understand. Why are you trying so hard to fit in when you born to stand out?”
- Ian to Daphne in “What a Girl Wants”
“I have it in me that I can be someone in this world”
- Homer to his father in “October Sky”
f.)  We are powerful to become “outstanding” (born to “stand out”), to reach for and to achieve the
“extraordinary”, to reach for and to achieve the summits of excellence. It is the call of our human spirit to
“courage” as innate or intrinsic to the character of God’s Spirit.
( 2 )
Modern Educational Systems
Motivation Skills Concepts-
An Overview (cont.)
5.)    f.) (cont.) Definition of “Courage”: never to run in fear from, but always to proceed boldly forward through
cost, cross, crisis, and challenge toward our most cherished goals and dreams.
“Courage is the angel that makes the difference between a good life and a great one.”
“Great men and women are not great because they do not fail or fear, but because failure and fear do not
stop them.”   - (Thought attributed to Confucius)
6.)    Faith Factor! Believe the implications of the “Dignity” concept!
Believe in the implications of human dignity, and craft a path into your future building on the foundation of
your dignity and its ramifications.
a.)    Five “Faith” statements:
1.     A hundred times more powerful than what anyone believes about you is what you believe about yourself.
2.     Definition of “Faith”: to believe not what you see, but see always what you believe – especially what you believe with respect to your dreams, your life’s value, and your future.
3.     People who believe in their potential for excellence dare to be different.
4.     Believing is 90% of succeeding.
5.     “Faith” is in the reaching! (The Jogger story)
7.)    The True Test of Faith: “Tenacity!” = a heart that won’t quit!!!
The “Yoda Principle!”: “There is no try! There is only do, or do not!” – From “Empire Strikes Back”: Luke Skywalker says, “I don’t believe it!”, and Yoda answers, “That is why you fail!”
Mr. Miagi’s second lesson: ‘You karate do, OK! You karate no do, OK! You karate “guess so”, get squished
like grape!’
Remember the “Yoda Principle” lessons learned from “Elle” in “Legally Blonde”, and “Anne Marie” in “Blue Crush”.
Reaching for Dreams of Excellence even in the face of cost, cross, crisis, and challenge is the ultimate indicator of the “Faith Factor” present in the human spirit. “Faith” always says “I can!” and never, never quits. The words “I quit” are always preceded by the words “I can’t, I can’t, I can’t” and the Fear which inspires them.
a.)    “I can’t!” inspired by “Fear” leads to “I quit!”
b.)    “I can!” leads to rising each time you fall, and is inspired by the “Faith Factor” mind set.
( 3 )
Modern Educational Systems

An Overview (cont.)
8.)    The “Love Factor” – also known as the “Friendship Factor” or the “Team Concept
Defined: You will go one hundred times farther in life for a friend, with a friend, for love than you will ever go   alone.
Implications of the “Love Factor”:
a.)    No one climbs Mt. Everest alone. Unless we go “hand-in-hand” to dreams of excellence, we will not get there.
b.)    The “Master-Mind” Principle: “Synergy” – there is a level of performance power, and a level of performance insight we can only have together. Source for teaching on the “Master-Mind” Principle is Napoleon Hill’s book, “Think and Grow Rich”, second best-selling book of the twentieth century. (Second after the Bible!)
Good films to study in this regard: “October Sky”, “Rudy”, “Legally Blonde”, “Blue Crush”, “The Knight’s Tale”, “Cool Runnings”, “Miracle”, “Wizard of Oz”.
c.)    Harnessing the Power of Love, the greatest power in the universe to fuel our pursuit of dreams and goals. Examples of Sarah Hughes (2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics) and Kerri Strug (1996 Atlantic Summer Olympics) used in class. Also, the Father digging his son out of the earthquake, and the mother lifting the car off her child.
9.)    The Three Levels of Motivation:
a.)    “Factory of Fear” Level – Fear of punishment motivates performance. Motivation does not come from within. Lowest level of motivation. It is beneath our human dignity to encourage it.
b.)    “Profit Sharing” Level – Level of Incentives used to motivate behavior. This level of motivation was used in our class.
c.)    Highest Level of Motivation: “Romance” – Motivation rooted and reinforced by the Love Factor:
Romance: a type of story narrating the wonderful lives and extraordinary tales of knights and chivalric heroes, tales filled with excitement, love, and adventure. To quote John Elredge in “Wild at Heart”, such lives are characterized by a “battle to fight”, an “adventure to live”, and a “beauty to fight for”.
The Three “R’s” which give us “Motivation” with a capital “M”: “Reaching for Reason “Why” rooted and    reinforced by the Romance. This brings us to the “Bloody Sock” level of motivation where the pain of losing the dream is greater than the physical pain in the leg. Films which have such scenes are “The Karate Kid”, Blue Crush”, “The Knight’s Tale”.
“Reaching” = Faith. The “Reason Why” is the “Focus Factor” which releases “Powah!” into our performance. “Romance” harnesses the “Power of Love” which elevates performance to the summits of excellence. Whether teacher, doctor, or fireman, there is a level of performance excellence we can only achieve when we care for the people we serve.
10.) Remember: Remember always the Power of the Human Soul made in God’s Image: With God’s help there is no limit to how high that soul can reach, or how far that soul can go on a journey to dreams of excellence come true. Remember too to reach for that excellence with faith- faith to the point of unshakable conviction. Lastly, remember that this world only recognizes and rewards excellence!!!

Summer Courses - 2012

                                                                                                                                                                                              Summer, 2012

Please consider the luxury of leisure "summer-time" as an opportunity to take advantage of MES courses and tutorials, or of our products and services listed in the store at our more expansive website: http://www.modedsys-nereg.com/. For your convenience, we have published on our blogsite below the information and registration details that are sent out to high schools, parents, and students throughout New England.

Hoping to hear from you soon...

Sincerely,
Doug Michaud

COURSE INFORMATION AND REGISTRATION DETAILS - Summer 2012:

To Parents and Students in The Boston-Providence-Worcester-Nashua Area:

As a service to you, we have arranged this summer for students to participate in a special program specifically designed to improve reading, writing, and verbal skills performance, especially as they approach ETS testing on the PSAT’s and SAT’s. It is always of real concern to us that our students improve their ability to read, write, and study effectively and critically - abilities that can significantly influence both the quantity and quality of their work both now in high school, as well as during the college years to come.

For skilled performance on the SAT’s, and even to meet the demand of  our high school curriculum, our students are experiencing an ever-increasing need for proficiency at reading, writing, and study skills strategies. Especially in the area of reading, students now need to achieve a reading rate of 500-550 words per minute. Studies show that the average student reads at less than 300 words per minute.  Work and study on the high school and college prep level requires that you be continuously up to date with your material, and prepared daily for class participation. A deficiency in reading and study skills will detract from the overall benefits of your education. Often the difference between a good student and a poor or average one rests on the difference in his reading and study skills.

Accordingly, Modern Educational Systems has been invited to service students throughout the New England area. Their teaching and research have helped students for 25 years now in over 70 secondary schools and colleges in the metropolitan areas of Boston, Providence, Nashua, Worcester, and New York City. Without exception, reports from every school using the program witness to increased critical reading ability and verbal test-taking skills on ETS exams. Our results indicate higher scores not only on the PSAT’s and SAT’s, but also marked improvement on other nationally rating exams that your student will take over the next few years. These include high school entrance level tests such as the HSPT and SSAT, and also the ACTS exam administered on the senior high level.

We invite you then to consider this outstanding course. Repeatedly and convincingly, it has demonstrated in our students significant improvement in their reading and study skills proficiency, as well as higher performance scores in their verbal exams and critical thinking exercises.  Now, this program of instruction is being made available to you.

Further information, including an application, is enclosed.  If you have any questions please call Modern Educational Systems at the Home Office Number: (508) 668-9479. You may also contact Modern Educational Systems via E-mail at Modedsys@aol.com, or via our website at http://www.modedsys-nereg.com/. Especially visit the website to read student commendations of MES courses, and to see our store for further products and services available.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

PART 1:  BASIC CRITICAL READING AND STUDY SKILLS OVERVIEW

“PART ONE” OF THIS COURSE EMPOWERS STUDENTS WITH THE SKILLS NECESSARY TO READ WITHIN WEEKS AT 300-500 WPM+, WITH CONSISTENT HIGH COMPREHENSION.  THE VAST MAJORITY OF STUDENTS TODAY ARE READING WELL UNDER 300 WPM WITH ONLY AN AVERAGE OF PASSING COMPREHENSION, OR EVEN LESS.  IN THIS COURSE, STUDENTS QUICKLY EXPERIENCE RAPID READING RESULTS, COMBINED WITH HIGH COMPREHENSION SCORING SKILL.  SUCH SKILL WILL GIVE THEM SIGNIFICANT COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE IN THE VERBAL SAT’S.  CRITICAL READING PROFICIENCY THEN BECOMES THE BASIS FOR OUR EFFECTIVE STUDY SKILLS STRATEGIES. PLEASE READ BELOW FOR MORE COMPREHENSIVE INFORMATION ON PART ONE.  THE “PART ONE” OF THE MODERN EDUCATIONAL SYSTEMS SAT PREP COURSE IS NOT OFFERED AS PART OF THE CURRICULUM AT ANY PUBLIC OR PRIVATE HIGH SCHOOLS IN THE NEW ENGLAND AREA.

FOR FURTHER INFORMATION:

Part I  is designed to develop critical reading skills and verbal exam test-taking skills.  This focus is chosen specifically  with a view to higher performance scoring ability for your student on the whole range of nationally rating exams your child will face over the next few years.
In fact, Modern Educational Systems offers the only prep course for increased proficiency in verbal skills exams, that targets the increased reading skill needs that will be required by students particularly on the PSAT and SAT’s.
With respect   to the critical and urgent need for increased reading skill on the part of students across the U.S., consider the seriousness of the following research results.  Consider too the many advantages and benefits  below that only MES courses have to offer.
Independent research by private organizations and major universities across the nation has produced some startling figures and conclusions:
1.  Twenty-three percent of college freshman dropouts are due to inadequate reading and study ability.
2.  A minimum level of performance of 500 words per minute is necessary for a student on the high
school and college levels to cope adequately with curriculum reading assignments.
3.  Efficient reading and study are no longer a luxury but a vital process necessary to academic success.
Reading is the fundamental tool of learning.  Better readers achieve more.
                4.  Students incapable of reading for high comprehension in the 300-500 wpm speed range, will be hard pressed even to  finish the verbal component sections of the PSAT and SAT’s within the allowed time limits.
All students face a similar problem.  Therefore, we have selected Modern Educational Systems, a professional teaching and research organization, to staff and conduct a reading and study skills program for our students.

WHAT WILL PART I DO FOR THE STUDENT?
All instruction in the 12 hours of Part I is on an individualized basis.  Cooperative counseling with our Guidance Office and faculty will help to insure maximum benefit to the student with regard to application of techniques to school work.  An important feature of the program is that the students will be trained to use course skills on their own school textbooks.  There is little practice required outside the class and practice assignments can be devoted to reading actual school texts.  Reading rate will be doubled in only 6 course hours, thereby reducing outside reading and study time by 50%.  Thus, the 18 hours are not in addition to a student's efforts but inclusive of them. The main objectives of Part I are to train the student to read at speeds equivalent to thought and to develop a personally effective study procedure.  Some areas covered in Part I are:  Critical Reading and Analysis, Reading and Thinking, Visualization, Notetaking, Outlining, Difficulty Reading and other pertinent areas.  Each student will be further trained in the skills of test taking, retention of information, and the relationship of reading to the learning process and communication skills.

PART II:  MORE ADVANCED STRATEGIES

PART TWO OF OUR COURSE COMBINES RAPID READING ABILITY WITH ADVANCED CRITICAL READING AND TEST-TAKING STRATEGIES.  ADVANCED SCANNING SKILLS WHILE READING MAKE STUDENTS INCREASINGLY PERCEPTIVE CONCERNING THEME CONTENT, MAIN IDEAS, AND IMPORTANT DETAILS.  STUDENTS ALSO LEARN THE KEY STRATEGIES (DISCOVER THE “CSI” APPROACH!) FOR MASTERING THE SAT SENTENCE COMPLETION SECTION.  IN THE WRITING SKILLS COMPONENT, STUDENTS ARE EXPOSED IN DEPTH TO ALL FORMS OF LITERARY SKILLS TESTED ON ETS EXAMS:  “IMPROVING SENTENCES”;  “IMPROVING PARAGRAPHS”; AND ALL KEY STRATEGIES FOR SKILL ON “THE WRITING EXERCISE.”  A FURTHER COMPONENT OF OUR PART TWO WILL TEACH “MOTIVATIONAL SKILLS,” AND ULTIMATELY, MANY OF OUR STUDENTS GIVE PRIMARY CREDIT TO THESE SKILLS FOR THEIR SHARP INCREASE IN THEIR VERBAL SAT SCORES.  PLEASE READ BELOW FOR MORE COMPREHENSIVE INFORMATION ON PART TWO.

FOR FURTHER INFORMATION:
Part II of our course builds on the more basic strategies of Part I.  It further develops critical reading ability and the study of test taking strategies designed to increase performance ability on the verbal skills type questions that students face from the Educational Testing Service (source and architects of the PSAT and SAT Exams!).  These questions largely assume standardized form from High School Entrance  level tests through College Board level exams.

The student finishes the verbal skills and test taking strategies of PART II,  with increased proficiency in answering all types of actual SAT verbal component questions.   Even the vocabulary lists alone are worth a minium of a 100 point increase in performance scoring results.  Students are taught vocabulary skills without extensive memorization procedures.  They are exposed to increased concentration skills; reading for main ideas; skimming and scanning; study and test taking methods in depth; and increased memory tools and techniques.  Students have reported on a normative and consistent basis  vastly improved ability at both reading and verbal skills, as well as exam taking.  We are committed to these results for your student or additional training will be provided at no additional charge.

Detailed Summary of Part II:
1. Primary emphasis on Application of Critical Reading and Thinking Skills to SAT level readings, to the Sentence Completion Questions and  to the Writing Skills Questions on the PSAT and SAT verbal.

2. Continued focus on reviewing, reinforcing, and developing further the basic skills of Part I, as they specifically apply to increased proficiency in verbal skills exams. These are as follows:
Better Comprehension                                                             Building Vocabulary
Critical Reading and Analysis                                                 Literary Analysis Skills
Passing Exams                                                                         Proper Eye Movement
Getting the Main Idea                                                               Better Memory
Structure of Reading Material                                                 Educated Guess Method
Skimming                                                                                Advanced Scanning Strategies

Effective Writing Skills:
                   Sentence Error Identification Strategies:
   Redundancy         Misplaced Modifiers
   Diction Errors      Parallel Construction

                   Paragraph Improvement Strategies:
   Transitional Devices
   Content Improvement Questions
   Revision Questions

“The Prompt” - Theme Related Strategies in Writing

3.  MOTIVATION SKILLS:   This is a key component of Part II.   Modern Educational Systems is the only school to include the teaching of motivation skills as a part of the preparation of higher SAT scores.

MES Summer Programs Description - 2010

Summer, 2010

To Parents and Students of High School Youth:

As a service to you, we have arranged this Summer for our students to participate in a special SAT Prep program specifically designed to improve their reading, writing, and verbal skills.

An important feature of the program is that the students will be trained on their own school textbooks. There is little practice required outside the class and eight of the 18 hours can be devoted to reading actual school texts. Reading rate will be doubled in only 6 hours, thereby reducing outside reading time by 50%. Thus, the 18 hours are not in addition to a student's efforts but inclusive of them. The main objectives of Part I are to train the student to read at speeds equivalent to thought and to develop a personally effective study procedure. Some areas covered in Part I are: Critical Reading and Analysis, Reading and Thinking, Visualization, Note-taking, Outlining, Difficulty Reading and other pertinent areas. Each student will be further trained in the skills of test taking, retention of information, and the relationship of reading to the learning process and communication skills.

PART II: ADVANCED STRATEGIES

PART TWO OF OUR COURSE COMBINES RAPID READING ABILITY WITH ADVANCED CRITICAL READING AND TEST-TAKING STRATEGIES. THE APPLICATION OF ADVANCED SCANNING SKILLS WHILE READING MAKES STUDENTS INCREASINGLY PERCEPTIVE CONCERNING THEME CONTENT, MAIN IDEAS, AND IMPORTANT DETAILS. STUDENTS ALSO LEARN THE KEY STRATEGIES (DISCOVER THE “CSI” APPROACH!) FOR MASTERING THE SAT SENTENCE COMPLETION SECTION.

IN THE WRITING SKILLS COMPONENT, STUDENTS ARE EXPOSED IN DEPTH TO ALL FORMS OF LITERARY SKILLS TESTED ON ETS EXAMS: “IMPROVING SENTENCES”; “IMPROVING PARAGRAPHS”; AND ALL KEY STRATEGIES FOR SKILL ON “THE WRITING EXERCISE.”

A FURTHER COMPONENT OF OUR PART TWO WILL TEACH “MOTIVATIONAL SKILLS.” MANY OF OUR STUDENTS GIVE PRIMARY CREDIT TO THESE SKILLS FOR THE SHARP INCREASE IN THEIR VERBAL SAT SCORES.

Even the vocabulary lists alone are worth a minimum of a 100 point increase in performance scoring results.
